* Since gaining power with the help and support of Moscow in 2007, the pro-Kremlin chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov has set up new rules trying to impose a very strict Islamic code in Chechnya – a country that is traditionally a moderate Muslim country (adherent of Sufism). In 2009 he stated his support of “honor killings”, which was met with strong opposition from human rights groups. He has received numerous accusations of human rights abuses against his own citizens, including torture and murder.
